“The Russia of the composer existed only in his art”, – highlighted Simon Morrison, Professor of Music and Slavic Languages and Literatures at Princeton University, describing the complicated relations between Tchaikovsky’s music and the context in which it was composed.
In anticipation of Morrison’s Discourse event stemming from his latest book, Tchaikovsky’s Empire: A New Life of Russia’s Greatest Composer (Yale University Press, 2024), The Purcell School for Young Musicians will perform at Pushkin House for the first time featuring a programme of music by the composer. What else can we see in Tchaikovsky’s music in the critical context of today’s interdisciplinary outlook on cultural production?
The Purcell School is the oldest specialist music school in the UK. It is well-known nationally and internationally and has been responsible for training some of the world’s leading performers, composers, arrangers, teachers and other industry professionals. It exists to train young musicians of exceptional ability, regardless of financial background.
This event will feature performances by students Anna (Winner of the 6th International Franz Liszt Competition for Young Pianists, 2024), Shlomi (Finalist, BBC Young Musician of the Year, 2024) and Luca (First Prize at the Alicante International Piano Competition).
Tickets are £15 (£12 conc.) and available to purchase from the Pushkin House website.
