At the beginning of the academic year, the Maths department launched a new initiative – the Purcell Maths Photography Competition – which challenged entrants to capture images of maths in everyday life. The competition was open to all Purcell students, and ran throughout the first half of the autumn term.
Mrs Stone, Head of Mathematics, explained that she and her team had hoped the competition would result in ‘a few images from students that we could put up in the classrooms’ but in actual fact they were inundated with high quality photographs, that were not only creative and inventive but visually stunning.
The winning images were announced in a special assembly on 7th November 2019. The four main prizes went to Harvey Cullis, Yinong Xiao, Phoebe Papandrea and Mina Hobson-Mazur, with Ella Richardson and Patchubun Panjamapirom being highly commended for their photographs.
It was Eric Wei’s inspired suspended compass and still life images, however, which saw him crowned the overall winner. Mrs Stone commented that Eric’s work ‘really stood out to all of us’ and that he had created ‘something very special for the department’.

The winning images are framed and proudly on display in the maths rooms.
