Purcell Student Attends National Youth Brass Band Residential

In early August, Year 11 baritone horn and trombonist Skye spent a week at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire on a residential course with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. After a week of rehearsals under the baton of Professor David King the Band performed a demanding programme of music in the glorious acoustic of Blackburn Cathedral. The Band was joined by guest soloist James Fountain, principal trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra and former principal cornet of the National Youth Band.

A week truly well spent! Well done, Skye.

Purcell Trumpeter at the British Army Summer Music Academy

During August, Year 12 trumpeter Rhys spent a week at St Omer Barracks, Aldershot on the Royal Corps of Army Music’s Summer Music Academy. Working with The Band and Bugles of the Rifles, Academy attendees spent a week ‘in the life’ of an army musician including experiences of basic training, drill practice and march practice. They were also taken to Windsor Castle to watch Changing of the Guard, including exclusive behind the scenes access to band rehearsals, and the chance to chat to band members about their experiences as army musicians – and there was even a chance to try on the famous bearskin helmets! The course concluded with a concert alongside the Rifles Band at the Tidworth Garrison Theatre.

What an amazing experience for Rhys.
