Pupils in year 10 at The Purcell School are celebrating their success in GCSE Music today. All pupils at the school sit their GCSE in Music at the end of year 10, a year early, and this year’s cohort all receive top grades. 100% of the year-group gained either an A* or A grade, with 67% achieving the A*.
Today’s results complete the picture at GCSE and IGCSE for year 11 pupils. In addition to this year-group’s strong results in GCSE Music from summer 2016 (which won the school an award from the ISM – the Incorporated Society of Musicians), a particular highlight was their results in English Literature and modern languages.
Pupils at The Purcell School are encouraged to regard their academic studies as an essential complement to their performing skills: the curriculum aims to nurture a rich cultural hinterland for each young person, such that their musicality is deepened as a result.
Headmaster Stephen Yeo commented: “I was thrilled to learn of the exceptional results in GCSE Music taken by our Year 10 pupils. This vindicates the need for specialist music education within the United Kingdom which enables young musicians of exceptional talent and promise to fulfil their potential. The strength of results in other subjects for Year 11 demonstrates the skills and proficiencies which music helps develops in young people”.
