Waves: Issue 2
Last year, outgoing Head Boy Hugo Max created a new multi-media magazine for the school entitled Waves. Populated with a host of short stories, poems, essays, articles, artwork and photography inspired by the theme of ‘transformations’, Waves showcased the creative output of Purcell’s students and staff side by side.
The publication was a huge success with Principal Paul Bambrough commenting that ‘The breadth, diversity and quality of the entries is truly astonishing. There is so much to provoke thought, challenge, engage and entertain.’
Such was its popularity that Head Girl Eva has now taken up the mantle as editor of the new, second issue of Waves, and would like to share the following call for submissions to all Purcell students, staff and alumni:
Waves was created for the short poem you have at the back of your English folder, for the doodle you did in German, for the first roll of film you exposed, and for the story you wrote in a hurry one night when inspiration struck. All these wonderful creations you have that you wouldn’t necessarily showcase to others have a home in this magazine amongst like-minded supportive friends and family, and I would really like to make a new issue to show these pieces of work.
Anything is welcome! We had someone submit a science paper last year that got published, film reviews, music reviews, a piece of music . . .
Please submit all work to publicity@purcell-school.org. The deadline for submissions is 7th June (the Monday after half term) and, in a change from last year, Eva has also opened up this issue to entries from alumni.
If you would like to see the first issue of Waves, it is available here.
Watford Jazz Function Community Music Festival
After two postponements and a final cancellation due to Covid-19, it has been wonderful to hear that a live jazz set with alumna and jazz singer Emma Smith will premiere on 20th May at 7.30pm to mark the occasion of what would have been the inaugural Watford Jazz Junction Community Music Festival.
Emma, who grew up in Radlett and attended Purcell, was able to shoot and record the set thanks to a local crowdfunding campaign.
The Purcell Jazz Ensemble were also due to perform at the festival and we have it on good authority that they will be part of the 2022 line up.
For more information and the link to see the live premiere of Emma’s set, please visit the Watford Jazz Junction website here.
